An inflation rate of 40% and a 250% increase in the price of fuel in Zimbabwe led union leaders to call for a three-day national strike beginning January 14. President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government reacted to the strike by arresting and, reportedly, brutally beating union and opposition leaders. Civilians report that security forces also attacked civilians with tear gas, attack dogs, and batons. At least 12 people were killed. The internet was shut for almost a week and social media apps were blacked out. Most of the country lives in poverty.
