Samuel Rucogoza, a Rwanda-born social worker, recently honored his wife, Panorama Melian, on the first anniversary of her passing. Panorama, who was 40 years old at the time of her death, had shared 19 years of marriage with Samuel, and together they raised three children – Megan, Miguel, and Micah.

The memorial was held at a church in Biddeford. The priest read passages from the Bible, Panorama’s family delivered eulogies, and music filled the air as family and friends paid their respects.
Following the church service, over 100 mourners gathered at Eagles Aerie in Biddeford for a dinner of traditional Rwandan dishes. Family shared memories and made speeches, and a digital video showcased Panorama’s life.

Samuel’s family, friends, and colleagues from Hope Acts arranged the memorial. Samuel has worked as a Project Home Case Manager at Hope Acts since he came to the U.S. in 2017. According to his colleagues at Hope Acts, his friendly smile and helpful nature have made a positive difference in the lives of many at Hope Acts, who also joined to support the memorial.
According to the Rwandan Community Association of Maine, Maine is home to 2,000-3,000 Rwandans, who have built a strong community despite the challenges they faced after the civil war and Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Many have found success as business owners and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Maine’s immigrant population.
