Portland is proud to be a part of Welcoming Week, which will be celebrated nationally this year from September 10 – September 19. The theme this year is “Belonging Begins with Us.”

“Welcoming Week is an exciting opportunity to celebrate, among others around the country, that Portland is a global city; a city of neighbors where all individuals, from all backgrounds, races, ethnicities and countries of origins are welcome, celebrated and valued,” said Julia Trujillo Luengo, Director of the City’s Office of Economic Opportunity.

“As our city becomes more diverse, it also becomes a city where we all belong and feel welcomed. Please join us to learn from one another during this exciting celebration!”

The initiative is led and championed by the national organization Welcoming America. In concert with that, the City has partnered with Wayside Food programs to feature Recipes for Welcoming, where we will bring the entire community together through food. The main concept is to customize the boxes already being distributed within the food insecurity system with two recipes: one from Jamaica and one from Latin America, with all the necessary ingredients to make those two meals.

We will also seek the engagement of those who are food secured, who have had the option to order the meal kits online through the Recipes for Welcoming website and who will be picking them up on Monday, September 13 at Wayside headquarters.

There will also be two Facebook Live events on September 15 and 16 where the chefs behind these recipes (Yardie Ting and Empanada Club) will “teach” us all and demonstrate how to make their dishes.
