In the crisp air of early autumn, the Portland Hearts of Pine (10-4-10) confirmed their current form with a second straight victory on September 27, defeating the Sherman, Texas, team of Texoma FC (6-12-8) 1-0. In front of 5,781 spectators, the Hearts of Pine replicated the previous week’s scenario: a defensively solid performance, another clean sheet, and three valuable home points.

The match got off to an intense start: in the 13th minute, Titus Washington intercepted a clearance from Javier Garcia and launched the ball toward Masashi Wada, who attempted an audacious lob over the goalkeeper. Garcia leapt with perfect timing to deflect the shot wide, signaling that vigilance would be key throughout the game.
The first half, marked by intense duels and repeated fouls, produced 15 total chances. Portland registered nine shots from six different players, yet the score remained goalless at halftime, reflecting a tight and tactical battle.
The suspense continued until the 70th minute, when Washington came close again with a long-range strike brilliantly tipped over by Garcia. The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute, courtesy of Messer, the Hearts’ left-back.
The decisive play: Washington recovered the ball at the edge of Texoma’s box on the right and served Natty James in the center, who quickly switched the play to Ollie Wright on the left. Wright kept Will Perkins occupied, opening the path for Messer to make a run down the flank. Delivered perfectly into the box, the defender struck precisely, beating Garcia and sending the Dirigo Union stand into celebration, releasing a cloud of orange smoke – a nod to Portland’s new blaze orange jersey.
