Paradox Teatro is a multidisciplinary performing arts company that will be coming to Mayo Street Arts in Portland in September, 2022. The group was founded in 2017 by artistic co-directors Sofía Padilla & Davey T Steinman. Their performance, Migraciones / Migrations, is informed by the increasing border conflicts between the United States and Mexico.
The performance uses the elemental forms of sand, water, and shadows on a lightbox as mediums to examine the relationship between the materials of puppetry and the migrant experience. These visual mediums are scored by live music (harmonica, mandolin, spare trumpet) and poetry in English and Spanish to communicate with audiences across languages and cultures.
The performance’s special effects are described by Greg Cook in Wonderland as “Dazzling… a man appears on the screen, crossing a desert speckled with a few cacti, under a blazing sun. Then Padilla draws in a border wall. The feeling is as if it’s being erected right before our eyes.”
The performances will take place on Friday, September 2, and Saturday, September 3 at Mayo Street Arts and will be followed by a free Sand Drawings and Shadows for Live Video Projection Workshop for beginners to experts of all ages.
