The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition (MIRC) joins our Asian member organizations and their entire communities in Maine and across the country condemning a racially motivated attack reported March 16 by the Portland Police that took place against an Asian American woman and her children around 2:00 p.m. We wish her a quick recovery. We applaud the members of law enforcement and the community who helped to identify the suspect.
Once again, we are reminded of how vulnerable even the safest places in our communities are to acts of hate. We stand with our Asian communities in Maine in condemning this hate crime. MIRC continues to advocate for safe communities that are truly inclusive and welcoming and we urge the District Attorney and the Attorney General’s Office to investigate this incident fully because we seek a justice system in Maine and the whole of America that reflects equality, fairness, and access.
MIRC represents 75 member organizations that include immigrant constituency groups, advocacy groups, direct
service organizations, and grassroots community organizations. MIRC’s mission is to improve the legal, social, and economic conditions experienced by Maine’s immigrants – enhancing their lives while strengthening Maine – through advocacy, information sharing, and collaboration both through and among our member organizations. Disclosure: Amjambo Africa is a program of Ladder to the Moon Network, which is a member organization of MIRC.
