Lunar New Year 2026 Celebration: A Living Tradition in the Heart of Maine

On Sunday, March 1, 2026, the Westbrook Performing Arts Center came alive with the colors and sounds of the Lunar New Year, thanks to a large celebration organized by the Chinese & American Friendship Association of Maine (CAFAM). From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., families, curious visitors, and enthusiasts of Asian culture gathered in a warm, festive atmosphere while learning about traditional customs.

The event’s tone was set at the entrance, where a vibrant poster depicted a stylized horse in geometric shapes and bold colors, surrounded by Chinese characters and traditional lanterns. This artwork symbolized the renewal associated with the Lunar New Year, while showcasing a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. The chosen aesthetic reflected the cultural roots of the celebration while remaining open and inviting.

The venue itself was carefully chosen. Located at 471 Stroudwater Street in Westbrook, the Westbrook Performing Arts Center is known for hosting large-scale artistic events. Its spacious and well-equipped facilities provided the perfect setting for an intercultural celebration of this magnitude.

The day’s program was designed to immerse visitors in Asian traditions. The space was divided into multiple zones featuring craft workshops, food vendors, and thematic presentations, which offered attendees opportunities to explore the culture from culinary, artistic, and educational perspectives. Children’s hands-on workshops were a major focus. True to tradition, CAFAM provided activities inspired by the zodiac sign of the year—the horse—allowing young participants to engage with Lunar Calendar symbols through play and creativity.

The culinary offerings provided a true feast for the senses. Food stalls offered a taste of Asian cuisine, turning the celebration into a shared experience of flavors and discovery. A highlight of the day was the performance by the Chinese Folk Art Workshop (CFAW Boston). Specializing in Chinese folk arts, this troupe added a spectacular element to the event. With their traditional costumes, synchronized choreography, and lively music, the audience experienced ancient art forms passed down through generations. Cultural performances like these are central to the celebration, preserving a rich heritage while sharing it with a diverse audience. The organizers also ensured the event was accessible to everyone. Practical information and ticketing were available online, and the poster even included a QR code for quick access to event details.

To understand the significance of this initiative today, it is important to look at its origins. The Chinese & American Friendship Association of Maine was founded on August 8, 1988, with the mission of promoting Chinese culture and strengthening ties between communities. Shortly after its creation, the association hosted its first Chinese New Year banquet. Though modest, this event marked the beginning of a tradition that would flourish and represented the first large gathering organized by CAFAM to celebrate the Lunar New Year in Maine.

In 1991, the South Portland Public Library invited CAFAM to organize a cultural fair, which became a major milestone for the community. This collaboration led to the first true Chinese New Year Fair. Over the years, the event grew in scale and changed venues: first a library, then the YWCA on Spring Street in Portland, followed by Catherine McAuley High School on Stevens Avenue, before finally settling at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center. From the start, the celebration—today called the Lunar New Year Celebration—has stood out for its wide range of activities. 

Early editions included creative workshops for children, always connected to the year’s zodiac animal, and in the early 2000s programming expanded to include performances like the ribbon dance, performed by students from CAFAM’s Chinese school. After the school closed, the association began inviting professional groups to maintain performance quality.

Additionally, conferences and educational programs were integrated to cater to adult audiences. Over the years, topics have ranged from Chinese history in Maine to Qi Gong philosophy, from acupuncture and traditional healing arts to economic relations with China, and more. This intellectual dimension gives the event depth far beyond a simple festival.

Today, the Lunar New Year Celebration in Westbrook reflects decades of cultural dedication. Through its artistic performances, culinary offerings, craft workshops, and educational talks, it provides an immersive experience of Lunar New Year traditions and demonstrates the vital role cultural associations play in promoting community, dialogue, and intercultural understanding in Maine.
