To the Editor,

As many people are acutely aware, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is the richest country in the world in terms of mineral resources. It is also suffering from violence on a scale that dwarfs that in Ukraine and Gaza – and unlike those conflicts, which are absolutely horrific, the one in DR Congo has already killed millions of people over a period of decades.

We Congolese do not understand the disinterest by First World nations toward the situation that DR Congo is going through. There is an international expression of concern toward Ukraine in relation to Russia, and toward Gaza in relation to Israel – combined with material assistance in some cases. But there is radio silence when it comes to the merciless aggression in DR Congo, some of it funded by Rwanda.

Does the fate of civilians in DR Congo interest no one? What is the explanation for the silence of the international community in the face of the genocide in eastern Congo?
