On March 29 members of the Tigray community in Maine and their allies gathered at Portland City Hall to bring attention to the crisis in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, which has seen 17 months of a humanitarian crisis of enormous proportions following the outbreak of civil war in November 2020.

The war has resulted in the killing of thousands of people, the displacement of hundreds of thousands more, and extreme hunger among almost half the population in the region.

At the rally, Mainers originally from Tigray called on the Maine delegation and the international community to intercede on behalf of their families and friends back home.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has publicly stated that ethnic cleansing has occurred in the Tigray region. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has warned of the potential for genocide.
