Gateway Community Services’ Maine Arts Program hosted a special women-only Henna Night on September 12 in Portland. The evening provided an opportunity for participants to relax and focus on mental wellness while enjoying the company of other women.

“We know many people in the community who have come from other places and are dealing with trauma. They may need to decompress, adjust, and feel comfortable in a new environment. A great way to support this process is through art,” said Jiwana Soleimani, Gateway Community Services Color of Climate Coordinator.

Dark and red henna were both available for use, along with stencils, and the organizers showed participants how to create their own henna designs. A movie played in the background, creating a cozy atmosphere for the attendees.

“I love henna. I love the design. I love creativity,” said Annastasia Candido, a participant. “It’s fun to come to this event after work and just relax and have fun and talk about different things with different people.”

According to the organizing committee, many women in the community are unable to participate in mixed-gender events due to cultural or religious expectations. With this in mind, they aimed to create a safe and comfortable space just for women.

“We offer a variety of community service programs,” said Samantha Hanson-Rolt, Director of Operations at GCSM. “This event offers a unique opportunity for women to bond and experience art in a supportive and enjoyable ambience.”
