In late June 28 the Congolese Community of Maine (COCOMaine) hosted an evening gala to mark the 65th anniversary of the independence of Democratic Republic of Congo from Belgian colonial rule. Held at the Elks Lodge Club in Portland, the event brought together more than 200 people for an evening rich in culture, emotion, and solidarity.
A colorful celebration
The evening kicked off with lively Congolese music that set the tone for a vibrant celebration. Traditional dances, a showcase of traditional clothing, and an exhibition of Congolese crafts and symbolic objects highlighted the country’s deep cultural heritage and invited the audience to connect with the great nation’s traditions and history.

Authentic cuisine and a successful fundraiser
Guests enjoyed a buffet of traditional Congolese dishes—including saka-saka, grilled fish, peanut rice, and beignets. The food delighted taste buds and contributed to the festive atmosphere.
Beyond sharing a celebratory night together in honor of Congo’s independence, which was gained on June 30, 1960, the event had a clear goal: to raise funds in support of newly arrived Congolese immigrants in Maine.
According to the organizers, the funds will help support:
- Integration programs for immigrant families,
- Educational and cultural activities,
- Administrative assistance with resettlement paperwork
A united and open community
The event showcased the strength and inclusiveness of Maine’s Congolese diaspora. In addition to Congolese families, members of other African communities, representatives of local organizations, and American residents who value diversity and inclusion came together in solidarity.
“This isn’t just a party. It’s a statement of identity, a call for unity, and a bridge between cultures,” said one organizing committee member.
Buoyed by the success of this year’s event, COCOMaine plans to make the independence gala an annual highlight in the Portland area—celebrating Congolese heritage and strengthening community ties across cultures.
