Elias Taye took over as Editor-in-Chief of Amjambo Africa on April 1, succeeding Kathreen Harrison. An experienced Ethiopian journalist and editor, Taye has reported across Africa and internationally. He brings a decade of experience in reporting, fact-checking, and editorial leadership to the role.
Taye’s vision is to strengthen Amjambo Africa as a trusted platform for thoughtful journalism, connecting the diaspora and global audiences. He plans to expand investigative reporting, highlight African innovation and culture, and amplify authentic voices that are often underrepresented in international media.

In an email interview, Taye responded to questions from veteran Amjambo Africa journalist Eloge Willy Kaneza, sharing insights about his journey in journalism, his vision for the publication, and the new directions he hopes to introduce.
Q&A with Elias Taye
Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your journey in journalism?
I am an Ethiopian journalist and editor with more than a decade of experience covering politics, conflict, and governance across the Horn of Africa. I previously reported for the Associated Press and the German Press Agency for a decade, and later founded Ethiopia Check and Meseret Media. My work focuses on credible reporting, fact-checking, and strengthening independent journalism.
You have reported extensively across Africa and internationally. Which experiences have most shaped you as a journalist?
Covering major political developments and conflicts in Ethiopia and the region shaped my understanding of responsible journalism. Reporting breaking global news reinforced the importance of accuracy and speed. Building fact-checking initiatives also deepened my commitment to combating misinformation.
What inspired you to accept the role of Editor-in-Chief at Amjambo Africa?
I believe that Amjambo Africa offers a strong platform to connect African stories with diaspora audiences. I was inspired by its mission to highlight immigrant perspectives that are often underrepresented in global media. The role allows me to bring together my experience in reporting, editorial leadership, and digital media.

What is your vision for Amjambo Africa as you take on editorial leadership?
My vision is to strengthen Amjambo Africa as a trusted platform for thoughtful and balanced journalism. I intend to shape it as a hub for “service journalism.” Expanding its digital reach and contributor network will also be a priority.
How do you plan to strengthen Amjambo Africa’s connection with diaspora communities in the United States and beyond?
We will actively engage diaspora writers, scholars, and community voices. Listening to community interests and reflecting their experiences in our coverage will be key. Expanding digital storytelling and interactive platforms will also help deepen this connection.

Are there editorial priorities or new directions you hope to introduce under your leadership?
Strengthening investigative and analytical reporting will be a priority. I also want to expand coverage of innovation, entrepreneurship, and cultural influence within African communities worldwide. Reinforcing strong fact-checking practices will remain central to our work.
Immigrant stories are often told through external lenses. How important is it for immigrant journalists and media platforms like Amjambo Africa to tell their own narratives?
As someone who worked for a global media outlet from Africa, I understand that it is extremely important for immigrants to tell their own stories with authenticity and context. Local journalists understand the cultural and social complexities that are often overlooked. Platforms like Amjambo Africa help ensure immigrant voices shape global narratives.
Journalism today faces many challenges: financial pressures, misinformation, political tensions. How do you plan to navigate these as Editor-in-Chief?
Credibility and strong editorial standards will guide our approach. Building diverse partnerships and sustainable media models will also be important. Most importantly, we will remain committed to accurate and responsible journalism.
What message would you like to send to current and future contributors?
I encourage contributors to bring bold ideas, strong reporting, and diverse perspectives. Amjambo Africa aims to be a collaborative platform for thoughtful journalism.

Accuracy, fairness, and accountability guide my work.
What motivates you to continue telling African stories at this moment in history?
Africa is undergoing profound social, political, and economic transformation. The global sphere [is] too. These stories deserve to be told with depth and nuance. Contributing to that narrative is both a responsibility and a privilege.
Amjambo Africa is currently expanding and focusing on other immigrant communities Tell us how you would balance this with its roots in the African experience?
We will stay rooted in African storytelling while also creating a space for shared immigrant experiences. As such, the goal is inclusion without losing our core voice.
What opportunities does this expansion create?
Obviously, it allows us to connect various communities with similar experiences and tell more diverse, relatable stories, and strengthen our impact to our readers.
Outside of journalism, what are your hobbies or passions?
I enjoy watching documentaries, following global affairs, and spending time with my family. I am also interested in technology and digital media trends. These interests help me stay curious and informed.
How do these interests influence your work or help you stay inspired as a journalist and editor?
They help me stay connected to broader global conversations. Curiosity about technology and global affairs often sparks new story ideas.
