The outcome of the presidential election will have a significant impact on the lives of all Americans and possibly even on our democratic system of governance – among the policies being suggested by the Republican party is a greater consolidation of power in the executive branch of government.
The outcome of elections for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives will also be highly consequential for the lives of Americans. At present, Republicans hold the majority in the House and Democrats hold the majority in the Senate. Both parties will try to gain majorities in both the House and the Senate, thereby maximizing their ability to enact their agendas. Because of the U.S. system of checks and balances, the president needs their same party to control the legislative branch of government – the U.S. House and Senate – in order to maximize their ability to enact their agenda.
